The vineyards

The magic of the Mediterranean terroir

The origin of the character of Casa Cesilia wines and their greatest asset are, without a doubt, its vineyards, located in a privileged location outside the town of Novelda (Alicante).

Since 2009, Casa Cesilia has committed to an organic and balanced production which is sustainable and respectful to the environment.  Not treating the vines with synthetic chemical products, results in healthier, more complex and higher quality wines.  Also protected by the “Protected Designation of Origin of Alicante”, our wines comply with demanding quality and production requirements.

Aware of the importance of carefully taking care of each step of the winemaking process, the team of oenologists are equipped with the most advanced viticulture techniques. Their objective is to bring out the qualities and peculiarities of the “Mediterranean terroir” where the vineyards are found. They have the complex task of transferring the magic of the “terroir” to the bottle.

The native Monastrell grape variety is  the dominant one and  the undisputed protagonist of the vineyards at the Casa Cesilia estate.  In addition to this variety, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah are also cultivated for the red wines, and Albariño, Macabeo, Muscatel, Malvasia and Sauvignon Blanc are grown for the white varieties.

The texture of the soil, silt loam, has a high content of limestone rich in iron oxides that balances and reduces problems related to chlorosis which can be found on this type of soil.

The northern part of the estate is composed of clay and plaster, associated with a low organic matter content, enabling a good aromatic expression and guaranteeing a good structure for the wines of the region. The southern part is composed of gravel from river alluvium and silt. These light and fresh soils are very well suited to the white varieties.

Our Mediterranean climate has a slight continental influence, allowing us to slow the ripening of the grapes and keep the humidity very low all year long, which protects the vines from cryptogamic diseases.
